The End of the Line l Stephen Linsteadt

The End of the Line, oil on canvas, 193 x 216 cm, 2020

As the first wave of the pandemic began to peak, images of food lines hit the news and social media. Around the globe, there was no end to the end of the line. These images were the catalyst for the painting, although I wanted to focus on the Brazilian landscape and the soaring need in Brazil.

Mythological figures were added: Venus and cherubin. They were later absorbed in a turpentine rag. The faint traces that were left added clues to the sky and landscape.

Garden vegetables found their way to the foreground. It is ironic that the people who grow and process our food are the hardest hit. In the end, I wanted to speak to the problem. Like the children, some observers look at the need straight on, while others look away.

By the end of 2020, more than 690 million people worldwide were going to bed hungry at night.
